The proposal was submitted after Mr. Kiyofumi Inoue, a Japanese researcher at the Tokyo University of Science and a ceramic engineer, had attended the International Ceramic Congress held at the Innsbruck Technical University, Austria, in 1987 . During this meeting, the main aim of the International Ceramic Society was to promote the international exchange of knowledge and to establish a database of knowledge, so that it could be referred to in the future for the development of the ceramic industry. In Japan, research is conducted mainly in research institutions and the dissemination of research results is limited. On the other hand, in Europe, research is conducted by a large number of research institutions and the dissemination of research results is generally done through publication in scientific journals. The proposal for the establishment of a centre of excellence in the field of ceramics, which is presented in this report, was submitted by Professor Sato . The aim of the proposal was to create a system of cooperation and mutual support between the ceramic industry of Europe and that of Japan.
